The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami is one of the biggest disaster in Asia. This had a huge impact on Thailand physically and economically, but most importantly it affected and impacted the lives of both the locals and the tourist that was there I that day.
26th of December 2004 was a disastrous day in Phuket, about 228,000 people were killed as a result of the 9.1 magnitude earth quake and the giant wave that slammed into the coastlines. The violent uproar of the ocean floor cause billions of tonnes of seawater to race towards the shorelines at unbelievable speeds. The giant waves flatten the mountain sides hundred of meters from sea, capsizing ships and threw boats into trees. The total estimated cost of damage was just under $10 billion. Although there was several hours between the earthquake and the impact of the tsunami, nearly all the victims were taken completely by surprise. With no proper warning systems in place, there was no alert issued to people to seek safety.
